RANDI What guy? BOB I remember you with some guy at Karl's party. Someone special. RANDI Oh! No, no. Ed. Edward. A close friend. He just moved to San Francisco. BOB Miss him? RANDI I do. So does Ellen. In her own...unique way. (The two chuckle.) We--the three of us, were--ARE very close. CUT TO: INT. KITCHEN Karl is loading the dishwasher. Ellen is smoking a cigarette leaning against the sink. KARL Some people don't appreciate your sense of humor, Ellen. ELLEN It's a reflex. Sorry. I'll go in there and eat the whole box of chocolates to make it up to him. KARL You see? There you go again. ELLEN It's just weirded me out. When he came up with that "so now are you two going to start a family?" ~thing. KARL I don't tell everybody our business. I guess guys don't talk about things like that. ELLEN That is bullshit. He knew we had made a decision years ago not to have kids. KARL Why would Bob know that? I figured you not wanting to have children should come from you. (Ellen stops. She looks Karl straight into the eyes.) ELLEN Whoa! Since when has this shifted to ME not being the one who didn't want children? KARL I never said that I didn't want to have children. ELLEN Give me a fucking break, Karl! KARL Ellen. Don't swear. ELLEN We talked about this before we got married! CUT TO: INT. DINING ROOM RANDI You left a six figure job to open a candy store?! BOB It's just...that I wasn't happy at that job. RANDI That's a lot of money to walk away from. BOB I don't care about stuff like that. RANDI That sounded superficial. BOB (chuckles) It's weird, I know. But candy always seem to bring happiness to people. Except diabetics. That's not true. We do have diabetic candy. Bob freezes. Randi and he stare at each other for a moment. She then smiles warmly. BOB (CONT'D) Oops. ~I've gotten off track here. RANDI (studying him) You sound...interesting, Bob. BOB I do? RANDI Yes. BOB Oh. Well,...I thought it was just a...neat thing to do. And if I was going to work for the next 35 years I wanted it to be in a happy place. And...to make people happy, too. RANDI Very few people get to do what they love. (pause) But a six figure job! What was it you use to do? BOB I headed one of the chemical research departments for Standard Oil in Venezuela. They got me when I was still in grad school at MIT. RANDI (searching.) That's a good school. And I hear Venezuela is nice. And Spanish...like.
